Did you know that birthing in an upright position has many positive benefits? I believe every person should have the option to choose an upright birthing position if they desire.

Here are ELEVEN benefits to upright positioning.

  1. You’ll get a gravity assist. Believe it or not, the most common birth position (on your back with your knees pulled to your chest) actually forces you to push baby uphill causing you to work harder for longer. Learn to use birth positions that help you work WITH gravity, not AGAINST it.

  2. Less compression of the aorta which carries the oxygenated blood to mom and baby. This means less risk for heart rate changes in baby that often lead to more interventions! Think about this - they tell us not to lie on our backs for 9 months and yet it’s OK to be here for hours during birth? It just doesn’t make sense!

  3. Your uterus is more efficient and therefore you’ll have more efficient contractions. Nuff said 💪

  4. Baby will be better positioned to pass through the pelvis. This means smoother descent, less “stalls” or “delays”. This means less need for “force” and less risk for other unwanted interventions.

  5. Your pelvic outlet is wider. This is the bottom of the pelvis where baby passes through the pelvic floor and then exits. More space here is always good. Space = more room for baby to navigate and less risk for injury to the pelvic floor.

  6. Your Birth satisfaction will be higher. This is one of, if not the most, memorable days of your life. You’ll want to look back it and feel positive about your experience. Having higher birth satisfaction is also shown to reduce your risk for Postpartum Depression and Anxiety.

  7. You’ll experience lower levels of pain. Who doesn’t want this? It’s especially an important strategy if you are looking for an unmedicated birth. When you can move, work with gravity, create space, have a more efficient uterus, there is just less discomfort.

  8. Shorter length of pushing (by 8 minutes!)

  9. You’ll have a lower risk for needing vacuum/forceps assist. This means less risk for pelvic floor injuries.

  10. Reduced risk of G3-G4 perineal tearing. These are severe tears which you’ll want to learn how to avoid.

  11. Fewer cases of Cesarean birth due to “Failure to Progress”. Again, when you can use movement, gravity and create space, there are less stalls and delays which means less risk for Cesarean!
